BBC Science Simulations 2 provides opportunities for early elementary students to interact with seven virtual science investigations. Students can observe how shadows change over the course of a day, investigate which of four materials is the best thermal insulator, and much more. Students can develop their understanding of fair testing by controlling variables on screen and can see instant results by selecting to view a table or graph alongside the animation. A "Questions" section with full narration provides ideas for investigations that students can complete independently.
BBC Science Simulations 3 was designed to enhance science investigation skills for upper elementary students. Virtual experiments exploring varying topics such as plant growth and and electrical circuits allow teachers and students to experience a wide range of phenomena in ways and at speeds that would be difficult to achieve in the classroom. The "Questions" portion of the software includes ideas for exploration. Students can manipulate a variety of variables and instantly observe their effects.
Use this program to practice money and math skills.
MathType has three important accessibility capabilities. First of all, MathType can be used as an add-on to Microsoft Word to enable students with hand writing or mobility issues to create math equations with a computer, either via the keyboard, mouse, or with a variety of adaptive mouse tools. Secondly, MathType can be used to create accessible math content via MathType's MathPage function. The resulting web document can then be read with any MathML-enabled screen reader or assistive technology application.
The Signing Math Dictionary (SMD) is one in a series of illustrated, interactive 3D sign language dictionaries and pictionaries. The SMD is designed for grade 4-8 students who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing and use American Sign Language (ASL) or Signed English (SE) in the classroom. The SMD supports access to standards-based math content among elementary and middle school students and contains 705 math terms and will link to definitions in other dictionaries and pictionaries from the series. Requires ITunes to download.
Using survey data, the authors examined the relationship between intensity (as opposed to duration) of a technology-focused professional development program and specific participant characteristics in predicting successful outcomes. The four participant characteristics chosen were: teachers' feelings of preparedness to support student technology use, teachers' perceptions of the usefulness of creating technology-based projects with students, teachers' perceptions of the relevance of the pedagogical approaches emphasized, and teachers' prior use of featured software.
This study compared learning for fifth grade students in two math homework conditions. The paper-and-pencil condition represented traditional homework, with review of problems in class the following day. The Web-based homework condition provided immediate feedback in the form of hints on demand and step-by-step scaffolding. We analyzed the results for students who completed both the paper-and-pencil and the Web-based conditions.
Classworks is a web-based instructional software that provides interactive lessons, customized learning and assessment in K-12 Math, Reading, and Language Arts. Elementary Science lessons are also available. Classworks units are based on state standards and offer interactive instruction through a multi-sensory approach that includes voice, pop-up text, audio support, video, photographs, artist drawings, and animated clips. The multiple modalities may be helpful for those with limited English proficiency or learning disabilities, or as a Response to Intervention.
In the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), Congress called for the U.S. Department of Education (ED) to conduct a rigorous study of the conditions and practices under which educational technology is effective in increasing student academic achievement. A 2007 report presenting study findings for the 2004-2005 school year, indicated that, after one school year, differences in student test scores were not statistically significant between classrooms that were randomly assigned to use software products and those that were randomly assigned not to use products.
