School Rules! Volume 1 teaches older children (of cognitive age 8-18) acceptable behaviors during structured activities related to the classroom, group work and physical education. This volume also presents real-life video scenarios covering those parts of school life that are not part of academic programming, including hanging out with friends, hallway interaction, and the sensitive issues of PE locker room and personal hygiene. This program allows parents and teachers to tailor the video sequences to match each child's individual skill level.

The effects of three classes of reinforcing stimuli were compared across three students with profound intellectual disabilities. A multielement design with no baseline and final “best treatments” phase was used to measure the frequency of single-switch activations by each student across treatments. The three interventions were Treatment A, adapted toys and devices; Treatment B, cause-and-effect commercial software; and Treatment C, instructor-created video programs. Stimulus activations using a single switch were consistently greater when using individualized computer-based video programs.

This paper summarizes the results of a review of the empirical literature (1990-2005) focusing on use of assistive technology as a self-management tool for persons with intellectual disabilities. Forty investigations were identified which provided information on assistive technology to assist persons with disabilities to initiate and complete daily tasks. Four areas of research were defined and analyzed through the identified studies: (a) pictorial prompts; (b) tactile prompts; (c) auditory prompts; and (d) computer-aided systems.

This action research study examined the effectiveness of Touch Math, a math series that emphasizes use of manipulatives, to improve mathematics achievement with four third or fourth grade students with special needs (either mild mental retardation, learning disability, or health impairment). The students received mathematics instruction for 45 minutes daily (of which 20 minutes were spent on Touch Math) in a resource room setting over 14 weeks. Students were tested each week using Math Mad Minute Addition Tests.

This study compared standardized test scores in reading and math for second- and fifth-grade students from two similar technology-rich elementary schools in Miami Dade County, Florida. One school implemented Project CHILD (Computers Helping Instruction and Learning Development) as its instructional model. The other did not. Project CHILD is a K-5 instructional model that transforms the traditional grade-specific, self-contained elementary classroom into a three-classroom cross-grade cluster.
